St Ives Farmers’ Market, established in 2003, takes place on the first and third Saturday of each month, on Sheepmarket, from 8.30am to 2pm. This prime town centre position makes it easily accessible to shoppers and an integral part of the town centre Saturday trading. Please see our events page for the dates of upcoming markets.
The market started off as a Farmers’ Market in 2003. In 2018 it was decided to bring in ‘Specialist Food Traders’ which meant we could invite local businesses, importers of edibles, to add a further dimension to the shopping experience. Farmers markets and specialist food markets benefit farmers, consumers, the environment and the community.
Ten great reasons for shopping at this market:
- ‘Food miles’, almost all the Farmers, growers, producers and small businesses at the market come from within a 30/50 mile radius of St Ives.
- By shopping at the market you are supporting local farmers and small businesses, therefore stimulating local economic development by increasing employment and keeping money within the local area.
- The market helps to bring life into the town thereby aiding regeneration.
- Local growers are not obliged to present their produce ‘pre-packed’ using unnecessary plastics, therefore the negative impact on the environment is much reduced. Fresh produce can be bought loose, saving the shopper money and creating less food waste at home.
- The market provides direct contact and feedback between customers and producers/importers so you can know the full traceability of your produce.
- They provide a secure and regular market outlet for growers and small businesses, especially valuable for small scale and new producers businesses.
- The market helps to improve diet and nutrition by providing access to fresh food.
- The market serves to cut out the ‘middleman’, allowing increased financial returns through direct selling.
- You can pick up great cooking tips from the producers and growers.
- The market raises awareness about where food comes from and how it is produced in your locality.
Together our traders offer a broad and high-quality shopping experience. Please see below a list of produce and products, that can regularly be found at the market. Please note not all the below attend twice monthly, but many do (the list is subject to change).
