Former Mayor Pasco Hussain

At the Annual Council meeting on the 5th May this year, Cllr Pasco Hussain was appointed The Town Mayor of St Ives and Cllr Phil Pope was appointed Deputy Mayor via a virtual Zoom ceremony, as per the custom of these strange days.

The Mayor's term of office is twelve months, during which time the Mayor will have a very busy schedule assuming Covid precautions allow.

Its not all about appearing at Civic events, the role also involves raising awareness of local groups, helping to promote the Town, arranging fund raising events to support local Charities and organisations, as well as continuing to work for the Community in the capacity of Town Councillor.

An introduction from the Mayor

I am privileged and honoured to have been elected Mayor of this beautiful Town that I love and have called home for over 50 Years.

It has been a great place to live and bring up my family, and having had several businesses here over the years, I can vouch for the supportive environment for which I am most grateful.

St Ives is also blessed with a great community spirit which I have witnessed first-hand, especially during this pandemic. We have been living through difficult and challenging times, but non the less, everyone has pulled together to help and support one another.

It is for all this that I will be putting my heart and soul into serving this wonderful Town and everything that it stands for.

Charity Golf Day

Held at Lakeside Lodge, guests from all around enjoyed the August Bank Holiday participating in golfing, a BBQ, raffles and mini games. Businesses located in St Ives sponsored holes on the course and joined in with the ‘Fun-filled’ packed day."I would like to thank all those who sponsored, donated and generously supplied us with prizes. I am incredibly grateful and overwhelmed by the fantastic support from all those who took part.
I would also like to thank Lakeside Golf Club for hosting the day and particularly Jon Dalton and the Civic Officer who worked tirelessly in the background to ensure it all ran smoothly.
Together we raised a grand total of £2,116.21 which will be going to Acorn Cancer Care, St Ives Day Care Centre, The Royal British Legion and MAGPAS. Well, done everybody!"

Michaelmas Fair

St Ives Town Mayor Councillor Pasco Hussain has greeted fair goers on the opening of the town's Michaelmas Fair. Families and children, started arriving October 11th to enjoy the wealth of rides within the town centre. It is the first time the fair has been back for two years, due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Councillor Hussain, expressed his joy yesterday, that the fair is back in town, he said: “I am absolutely delighted to be here today. The community needed this after all the doom and gloom and some fun back in our lives. To help with our mental health, this will all help. The weather has been kind and it is lovely today and it looks set to nice for the next couple of days as well, so we need to see these smiles and we are desperate for it!”

Michaelmas Fair has been a regular fair in St Ives of some kind since the 12th century, when Henry I granted a charter to the Abbot of Ramsey to hold a fair at Easter.

The Michaelmas Fair is believed to have started in St Ives in the middle of the 14th century.

Santa on the Quay

Hundreds of people gathered to see Santa arrive on The Quay in St Ives at the weekend.  Santa arrived on Saturday December 4 to meet fellow residents of St Ives along with his happy helpers. Santa glided in on a Snowboat with Chief Snowman Frosty and water reindeer pulled him in from the river by St Ives town scouts and the Huntingdon Canoe club.

Mace-Bearer Phil Ganny and Pasco Hussain the Mayor of St Ives also came to greet Santa and they all made their way down to the St Ives Corn Exchange to Santa's Grotto.

The event was held by the FESt committee which focuses on providing free events for the people of St Ives.

Langley Bread

The long-standing tradition of distributing the Langley Bread in St Ives took place on Wednesday 5th January 2022 at the Corn Exchange, The Pavement, St Ives.

120 Bags of selected groceries were distributed to Widows and Widowers who reside within the parish boundary of St Ives and are on the electoral roll. For the third consecutive year, The Co-operative Food, St Ives donated produce to make up these bags which included, sugar, teabags, biscuits, bread and butter.

St Ives Town Council Groundsmen also delivered over 40 bags to those who are a resident at Broadleas Court and Harvest Court.

The annual tradition goes back to 1656 when Robert Langley, who was a prominent St Ives citizen, left money to be distributed to the poor widows and the fatherless children of St Ives on a January day.

It is also said that Robert Langley left money for the bell ringers of St Ives' parish church.

The story is that he was lost in a snowstorm one day on Hemingford Meadow, while walking to St Ives, and he heard the bells in the parish church and they guided him to safety. So, in gratitude for that, he left money to the bell ringers.
On one day in January the bell ringers still ring a peel, just in case someone else is lost on the ancient meadow.
